Too sensitive EVF eye sensor

I have Z6 with the updated firmware. I set automatic switch between EVF and monitor. It looks that the eye sensor for the EVF is too sensitive. From time to time the automatic switching stops working and EVF gets stuck being active. The monitor stays off as if I keep looking through EVF, even when I’m trying to replay photos on the monitor. The only way to (temporarily) fix it is to remove the EVF eyepiece and wipe it and the sensor. After cleaning the switching between EVF and monitor works, but after some time is off again. If I set the mode to monitor only it works, but I really prefer the automatic switching.

Welcome, sorry to hear you are having problems, the Z7 was reported to on occasion display the same problem but not having one i never followed it up.

Some one said it had a sensitivity setting, some one else said it was caused by slight movement of the rubber eyepiece another dirt on the eye sensor, one said it was the overcomplicated menue setting making you miss something, he could have been a Canon fan boy though :D

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

It has to be under warranty, I would call Nikon ans see what they say.

You’ve probably long-since resolved this issue, but I found a similar issue on my Z6. The solution was to take off the eyecup, wipe off the sensor (just above the eyepiece) and put the eyecup back on. Worked perfectly after that.

This sensor is very sensitive on many Z6 and 7 bodies. It can be set off by an eyelash. It can be annoying as all get out. There is no setting to correct it. I did purchase a new eye cup to get a better seal on my glasses and on of the unintended consequences was that it has not trapped any gunk in it since I changed it out. The only drawback is that I do need to remove it to put on my Flash Trigger or Speed Light. However I do not see that as a big issue compared to the improved seal and reduction in the trapped gunk.

I think it is better because it opens the area around the sensor up so there is no place for things to get trapped. I was going to upload a photo of my set up but it would not allow me to Upload a photo. Hear is a link with some decent photos.

Welcome to the forum by the way. I do not know what happened on the photos. Looks like they did post. Looks like a glitch in the forum the morning. I do hope this helps.

I bought and tried HoodEye, but found that I don't see the EVF as good as with the original eyecap. So I returned HE and then took a needle file and filed away about a millimeter of eyecap plastic on 3 sides around the sensor. I hope it should help with the problem...

Let us know if it works

Don't know if this could work here. But on some optical sensor that are overly sensitive we place a piece of frosted tape. Of course try at you own risk.

I think I am ready to report. After a few days of shooting in Florida I did not experience the EVF problem even once. It looks that shaving off a millimeter of plastic off the three sides of EVF solves the issue.
