    Raw and Z 6?

So got a new Z6 and tried shooting some pics with it. Funniest thing is when I connected it to my PC to see the files there were only JPG available. I thought heck maybe it's my firmware since it's still 1.0 so downloaded and tried to get the bin file onto the xqd but alas couldn't transfer it to it. Tried and failed the the nikon utility so ended up ordering the xqd card reader. My question is, shouldn't I be able to see the RAW files and not just the JPG without the card reader? Also would I have the issue of transferring files to it with a reader if I'm having issues with it plugged into the PC?

Currently the photo shooting setting I have are JPG Fine and RAW is set to 14 bit compressed lossless. When looking at the viewfinder or back LCD the RAW is greyed out but the JPG is white. Does this mean RAW isn't on? I won't have my card reader for a few days as it's being delivered and should have it on the weekend. Thanks in advance!

The default setting for the Z6 and all new Nikons I believe is JPEG. You need to go into the shooting menu and select "Image Quality" RAW or RAW plus JPEG. I have mine set to RAW only and I use snapbridge to send JPEG files to my phone as backup when I am out shooting. It is pretty slick.

You can transfer the photos to your camera by connecting the camera to your PC, but I have never done it. As for firmware updates they do require the a reader. I do not know why they did that. For me I have always bought the reader. I prefer pulling the card out of the camera.

Hope this helps... And welcome to the forum. AND congrats on the Z6. It takes a little time with the manual to get all of the details worked out, but once you do it is a great camera. I love mine...

Oh man thanks for the help! Google search for this answer and it never came up and stupid me for some reason when i went to the image quality setting i didn't scroll up to the NEF + JPG option and was only in the section with JPG so I was dumbfounded! But super happy now that it works! I have to say the feel of the z 6 is great compared to my a7r3 and all my sony lenses work great on the z 6 witht he adapter so gonna look for lenses to compliment the focal lengths i don't have on the sony. Thanks again!

It's better to look for answers in the online manual.
Or your manual with a app on a tablet.
Nikon knows more about a certain type camera as Google does...

You may need to download Nikon codec to view the raw files.

Yea that is definitely a must but latest lightroom should have support for it. Will download if it doesn't have support. Thanks!

If you are using the LR Creative Cloud it is definitely supported. One thing to note. If you are using native lenses the lens correction is built into LR and you do not have to do anything. You will see a note that says built in. If you are using adapted lenses, like the Sony lenses you mentioned, it is business as usual. You will have to select the lens to add it.

Hope you are enjoying the Z6. I am anxious to see some samples with the Sony Glass. I have to say I am curious how well they work on the Z.
