Electronic View Finder Pluses

One of the things I have really gotten hooked on is the EVF on the Z6, I was really unsure how I was going to feel about it, but it took about two or three photos to realize how amazing it is. It is bright and clear and it contains a wealth of information in addition to the standard DSLR info.

Of course the best is the WYSIWYG information. I can put my eye to the view finder and instantly know if the shot is over or underexposed. I used to have this habit of neglecting to note the light changes sometimes and end up with a shot or two under or over exposed. I cannot do that anymore. I also like having the Histogram in the viewfinder as well. That little addition has really helps me out as well. Seeing in advance what is going on with the histogram is very helpful.

It is just so different being able to see the exposure and focus rather than have to confirm by checking the photo after the shot. The other big plus IF you want to view the shot just to be sure, you can view it in the EVF without taking your eye away from it.

A few months ago I asked if there would be a forum for Z cameras and the response, generally, was that real Nikons are DSLRs. I guess that opinion has shifted bit now that the Z6 is outselling any other model by far. One of the biggest selling points is when first looking through the EVF, credit cards tend to fly out of wallets. There are a lot of other compelling reasons but the one that first hits home is seeing that bright, clear informative EVF, even in very dark scenes. The other advantages are recognized later after using it.
The YouTube influencers tended to bash the camera when it came out or even more before anyone touched one but most of the naysayers either walked it back or lost credibility when users started figuring out most of those channels are by people who know even less about photography then their viewers. I unsubscribed from most of the channels related to photography when I heard the nonsense they were spouting.
Although I have several other cameras which are very good (D850 and D800 for example) I find the Z6 to be more fun to use, it has motivated me to keep a camera with me and take shots just for the heck of it. I did a studio session last night and never even took the D850. In fact, while the D850 still has resale value I am thinking of adding another Z7. My first Z was a Z7 but after 10 days I traded it for a Z6 pius two S prime lenses. Some work need higher resolution and the excellent IQ of the Z7 matches the D850. The only new lenses I seek are Z mount S lenses, I am done buying F mount unless someone wants to sell a 105 1.4 cheap or a 200 2.0 prime at an affordable price.

After getting used to the stills performance those who try out the video capabilities tend to suddenly want to develop that skill. The video performance is probably the best in the industry. Try shooting a hand held 5 times speed slow motion video of mundane activities and see how it transforms simple actions into works of art

The Z6 is a game changer for me. I have 20/20 vision but it was a challenge relying on the green dot that we use with the DSLRs and they tend to provide less accurate focusing particularly with longer lenses. I almost sold my Zeiss 135mm f2 since I was struggling in getting the right focus unless if I use live view and use a tripod. My left eye is my dominant eye, and I tend to rub my face all over the LCD screen.

With the Z6 extended EVF, resolution and clarity, I've enjoyed using my MF lenses more than ever using the FTZ adapter.

@spb_stan, I agree completely. It is unfortunate that so many influencers made the discussion to phone in poor reviews. I am glad I ignored the naysayers and went to check it out on my own. I was not disappointed. The only difficult thing now is lenses. They will be Z lenses but that will take a little time. I am thankful for the FTZ adapter and some decent glass to get me through until the lenses come that I want . The other thing is that I am excited to start doing some things I have not tried before.

This camera has some options like focus stacking that I have never tired before. The IBIS has helped with my tremors and the WYSIWYG in the view finder has encouraged me to start playing with ND filters and long exposure. Exciting stuff...
