Confused, question

I'm considering moving from my D7200 to a mirrorless, but the lense thing confuses me. Do the S lenses, for example does the 24-70 fit both the Z50 and the Z6?

Yes, the "S" designation is simply a quality tag. "S" lenses deliver the highest quality to the Z mount they are attached to, regardless of weather it is a full frame (Fx) or crop mount (Dx) sensor.

There are two basic categories of Z lens, DX and FF and they will fit either camera. The Z50 is a DX camera while the Z5 and Z6 are FF.

Some of the Z lens designations.

S — High-end lenses
DX — Lens only covers the DX image circle. (FX cameras will switch to DX crop mode, which is a lower resolution.)
MC — Macro lenses
SE — Lenses with exterior design matching the Nikon Z fc camera.
VR — Vibration Reduction. Uses a moving optical group to reduce the photographic effects of camera shake.

All of the Z lenses fit all of the Z Bodies. The mount is the same for the Z50, Z5, Z6, Z7 etc. Just like the DSLR F mount. As Needa points out there are differences based on crop sensor or full frame; the Z50 is DX and the Z5,6,7,6II, and 7II are all full frame. There is also a FTZ adapter that will allow you to use the lenses that you currently use on your D7200. If your current lenses are DX lenses the Full Frame Z bodies would shift to DX mode. If they are FX lenses they will work on the FX bodies and the DX body like they do on your D7200.

Right now Nikon has a good deal on the Z5. It is full frame at a great price. They also have some lenses on sale. I wish you well in this. I really like mine.

Just to make sure I'm clear, the Z/mirrorless cameras share lenses regardless of full or crop sensor?

Yes, they will share any Z mount lens. The one concern is using DX lenses on FX bodies will change the image size from FX to DX so you do not fully utilize the FX sensor, but they will all fit and function.
