Re: spiders

Perhaps Bukitimah frightened everyone off with the extreme quality of his photos but this thread deserves to be revigorated. Spiders are amongst the most feared creatures in the world and yet they are the most fascinating. They are incredibly ugly and yet beautiful at the same time. Please, let's keep this thread going even if the quality can't compete with the original posts.

So here goes.

My favourite Wasp Spider.

Re: spiders

what lens were you using for the spiders Bukitimah, was it the 50mm wit the raynox? if so thats very impressive, ive been trying a similar setup but not managed to get as good as yours. Just out of curiosity, were these taken with a tripod / focusing rail, flash?

the last two are my favourites

Scott are you using any of the new gear for these fantastic shots.

No not yet Mike, I am only using my D800E, LED ring light, 90mm Macro Tamron and occasionally on board flash. Am looking forward to the arrival of my Raynox which is in transit.

Re: spiders

Here is a tiny Jumping spider, its pretty windy again today (picks up in the afternoon). I am wanting a calm day with no wind so I can try focus stacking. I have decided to leave the flower buds in this one as I think it adds some perspective.

Re: spiders

Not 100% happy with this one as the focus is off, bloody wind!!! I like the red background though and will revisit this little fella again when its not too busy.

Re: spiders

This is one of the smallest jumping spiders I have photographed so far, I first tried using tripod but he was moving too fast so I went handheld.

Re: spiders

Well I decided to have another look for my jumping spider that had a feed of grasshopper the other day, there was no sign of him I then had an urge to lie down on the ground and look up. This is what I found.

Jumping spider protecting eggs.

A "New" jumping spider. This is handheld with no flash just the ring light. And it is currently dark ;) as I think some may be nocturnal.

Thank you Mike, as a kid I used to love "collecting" all sorts of bugs. Now with a macro I can collect them and not do any harm. The way I photograph them is to try and capture the artistic concept of "bugs" in saying that I love the focus stacked ones, but for me I like to highlight a certain area and with spiders their eyes are amazing. I am looking forward to getting my Raynox DCR-250 as then I can get even closer as I am finding I am bumping leaves etc to get close. I have found that if you gently blow at a jumping spider that isn't facing you will get his attention and he will turn around ;)

I am thinking the only real difference will be that I can get the shot I want with out cropping ;) lets hope the IQ is just the same. Although I wonder if I can fit it to my other lenses :)

Remarkable shots, Scott. As you say, the eyes are just fascinating. If this is what you get at the moment, I can't wait to see your results with the Raynox. I'm going to buy myself a set of extension tubes to try to get closer.
