Teleconverter or 400+ lens?

So I just recently bought a old school 80-200 2.8 to use with my newspaper sports photography. And it got me thinking, how well would a 1.4 or 2x teleconverter work with this lens?

Since this lens is old school AF and the newer teleconverters are AF-S, wound that be a issue? Do I need to try and find a older Teleconverter?

Or would I just be better off saving the money and trying to buy a 400 or 600 lens?

I wanted to get a 300mm f/4 AF-D that wasn't an AF-S. The shop might have called it a screw drive lens. It wasn't compatible with any Nikon teleconverters so I bought the 300mm f/4 AF-S version instead. The shop said it might be possible that a Kenko teleconverter would work for the first lens I considered, but the quality of that teleconverter isn't nearly as sharp as a Nikon TC.

You might want to call Nikon and ask just to be sure.
