the only person i know on here that has that lens (D800 camera though) is @Scott Murray and he takes impressive star shots with it. You should check his shots out for some info settings?

Thanks Roy , yes I've seen Scotts pictures and always impressed
The quality shots that he gets is the reason I'm considering the Rokinon
just wondered if any disadvantages using it on a crop camera

It is a manual focus lens but you probably know that by now. That 14mm lens becomes a effective 21mm lens on your D7100. That is pretty wide for some of the shots you are wanting to get. you probably have a 18-55 or a 18 to something in your kit now. I would think you would be a lot happier with something like the Tokina 11-16 2.8 It is a lot wider, it is auto-focus and it is just as fast.

I have one for my D7100 and missed it a lot once I got my D750. That is when I got my Rokinon 14mm. Great lens but I saved up and got a Tokina 16-28 FX lens which is close to the 11-16 on a DX camera. That is the lens I use the most.

@Skwaz, I have not tried the 14, but I borrowed a 10 mm Rokinon on my D7200 and loved it. Good lens. I ended up buying a Sigma 10-20 f 3.5 after that. I really like the 10mm perspective on the 7200.

I have the 14mm with the D750. What is the best metering for shooting star trails? According to the Rokinon Instruction Manual it says to use it A,S, P, modes for the contacts to work with Nikon AF. Can you use manual mode? I am not getting a beep but a white indicator light comes on? Thanks for all your assistance. This is a 14mm F2.8 ED AS If UMC Lens.
