I have an opportunity to buy a very slightly used version on this lens for $500. A photographer friend bought it, used it a few times, then went FX exclusively. He held on to it thinking his wife might use it but she decided to go mirrorless instead. Has anyone here used this lens? I should be able to get my hands on it to try it out on my D500 sometime next week, but in the meantime I would be interested in hearing other opinions.

It is my favorite lens for my D5500. Pair it with the usb dock and you can make the thing focus amazingly well.

Based on your post I would say this is one of those deals you only hear about other people getting. Sold new that's an $800 lens you're talking about. Fiscal issues aside, image quality, across the board, is nothing short of SUPERB even when shot wide open. If for some reason you take leave your senses and pass on this deal, please direct your friend my way.

He shipped it out to me this morning. He told me to test it with my body for a few weeks and let him know because he has heard of some combinations with this lens having inconsistent autofocus results.
