Hi all,
the widest prime I currently own is the lovely nikon 35mm 1.8g lens. I was thinking to get a wide prime around 20mm focal length when I really need to show the landscape.
Budget wise I would like to stay around 300 dollars/Euros I know many people say that this lens is not super great but I plan to shoot it really stopped down (f/8). Alternatively, to save money perhaps also manual focus lenses might be used here (since it will be landscape shot) I would be stopping down the lens a lot (around f/8) and then everything would be within focus (if subject is just couple of meters away).
What do you propose?
Regards

The older MF AIS lenses are very good. Read up the reviews on 28mm/F2.8, 24mm/F2.8 and 20mm/F2.8. The 28mm is still in production, but you will get a pre owned piece at quite reasonable rate

NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8 from Nikon
NIKKOR 24mm f/2.8 from Nikon
NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8 from Nikon

One thing I like about the older MF lenses is that you have useful distance and DOF scale. If you are shooting landscapes at high F stops (f8-f16) with tripod, you use the distance scale to set up the focus at 1/3 the distance from the far edge and the DOF will ensure that the image is in focus.

That's not much of a budget. Sticking to it, I can only suggest the Nikon 28mm f/2.8D and I do so with reservation. Breaking your budget as little as possible, I'd suggest the Sigma 20mm F1.8 EX DG ASP RF.

If you're going to shop the used market, look for a Nikon 20mm f/1.8G ED. Stellar lens!

thanks for the tip do you have any recent reviews of these lenses tested on the recent sensor cameras?

I can find the nikon 20mm 2.8D around 300 euros now... I did not know about that sigma lens.. Thanks I will try to see for the reviews...
Still my questions is if any of your lenses that you suggest if stopped down "heavily" I can have very very good performance for my d750 or not. In case answer is yes then we have a buy!

Do you really need the lens right now? I mean, really right now? If not, save your coin until you can afford to spring a bit more for a really good lens that will do the D750 justice.

Rokinon 14mm f 2.8 is 379.00 with the AE chip. Took this shot with it on my D750. 8 more shots on my flicker page with the lens. Plus this shot looks better on Flicker too. NIK_1186_DxO_DxO.jpg

I just sold my Rokinon 14mm f 2.8 is 379.00 with the AE chip last week. It is a great lens. They hit the used market fairly often. I just sold mine because I got the Tokina 16-28 2.8 It fit my shooting style better but it was more expensive

I have thought about this recently as well. 2 events triggered it, one was a sale from Nikon of a refurb D810 body that I just ordered, and I also noticed when working indoor car shows, my little Sony P&S was in the 24-28mm range all the time. I was using that camera because the bulk of my D700 and 24-70 2.8 was just too much for these events, especially when I am there working as well as shooting. I was thinking that a prime in the 24mm or 28mm range would be ideal in terms of range and size. In reading on the internet, the 28mm 2.8D Nikon is a fairly cheaply made lens, with fairly average results, but the 24mm 2.8 D is a different animal. Optically very solid, really compact, and much cheaper than the brighter, newer versions. I think I will give the 24mm 2.8 a try, new they are near $400 but used you can get them for around $250, which is in the OPs budget.

There is no better lens than the Samyang 14mm. No need to focus just tape it up at10ft and work at F5.6 or more .Its so sharp you can crop like crazy .. Look at the Dxo figures for your D750 and ignore Rockwell.

Had a chance to try out a couple of ultra wide primes at a camera show recently.

I didn't buy either but both are on my wish list.

The first was the Siggy Artsy 20mm 1.4
20mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art | Products | Lenses | SIGMA GLOBAL VISION

The other was much less expensive and from a new lens maker. But I was impressed.

LAOWA Lenses - Laowa Camera Lenses for Canon, Sony, Nikon & Pentax cameras
12mm 2.8 and a less expensive 15mm F4 (which is a macro and offers focus shift).
These are manual lenses.

If you get a chance to try out any of these I'd recommend it.
