Tokina 11-16 f2.8 DX II

Hello everyone...

I have Sigma 17-50 f2.8 and Nikkor 35mm f1.8 for my D7100, and I am satisfied. Sigma is great for trips with my family, sharp and almost without any CA, with 17mm wide for landscapes and 50mm for some casual portraits, and 35mm f1.8 prime works nice for some night walks with or without flash.

Somehow, for my photography everything beyond 50mm is just too narrow, I tried twice with telephoto lenses, 55-300 and 55-200, but I just never found anything to photograph with those lenses. Maybe it is due to my camera crop sensor, maybe because I am an amateur, or just long lenses are not my thing. I hope someone will help me to understand.

Most of the time I tend to use wider end of my lens, so I am thinking of buying Tokina 11-16 f2.8 DX II, for our trips to the seaside, some landscapes, and casual shooting. But, I like to keep everything simple, so if there is not big difference between 17mm and 11mm I would like to keep the money, and stay with only two lenses in my bag.
I would like to know how wide is 11mm, or to be more precise, how different is 11mm from 17mm on my Sigma? Is there anyone with similar experience?

Thank you...

There is a lot of difference between 11 and 17 mm. Just like you, I have Sigma 17-50. It is a great flexible lens, but sometimes it is just not wide enough. For example, this picture

would not be possible with the Sigma. Once you have the UWA ability you will find many interesting shot opportunities. I use my Tokina for both landscape and architectural photography. Image quality is excellent, distortion is well under control and easy to correct in PS (look at the verticals in the above picture). I like this lens a lot and I think it complements the Sigma very well.

I will always recommend the Tokina 11-16 for anyone considering landscape and general architectural shots. This is a fabulous lens for this type of shooting. Here is an example of some landscape shots i took just last October.

Take a look at this Focal Length Simulator to get an idea of just how big a difference 6mm can make when talking about wide angle. That extra 6mm will net you just over an additional 18° in your field of view; I'd say that's a bit. Also, the Tokina 11-16mm, as has already been said, is an outstanding lens.

I sold off a lot of DX glass when I got my full-frame body, but I kept my D7100 and a few, select lenses for it. The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 is one of them.

Can you please share why you go full frame?

I took my Tokina 11-16 F2.8 ver 2 to shoot. I think my AFD 50 f1.8 is still better but a bit long on DX. This is a shot taken using the Tokina
