Well I am renting this to find out if I want to buy it or wait and buy the Nikon 14-24. I will have this lens for about a week and doing a full review for everyone. Taking everything from Nature, Protrait, Automotive, and Architecture. I will be posting photos on here when everything is complete. To be fair on the photos, all I will be doing is converting them from NEF to Jpeg at 300 DPI and adding a watermark. No sharpening or anything. If there is anything specific that you want to see or know about this lens post here in the next day or two.
This lens will be used on my D3 in manual mode.

I will be doing a review with photos later, but let me start off by saying how disappointed I was with this lens. Maybe it was because it was a rental, but the terribly slow focus, the focus ring would lock when open to 16 and not focus. Overall, It shot great when I could get it to focus, but this will not be a lens that I purchase.

I'm with you,Damon.I wouldn't buy a rental lens no matter what the price. That poor lens may have be beaten, dropped or gotten dirt up inside it.For me,I'd check out a new lens at my local dealers.See how it functions, then buy the new one.:)

If I were going to buy the lens I would have bought new. The lens that I rented may have been abused. There were just aspects that I really was disappointed in. The sharpness is great, but the focus issues are too much for me. I won't take the risk that I order one and have the same issues that I did with the rental. j
One of the biggest issues was the focus ring locking. The issue with the Tokina is that you can turn the ring all you want in AF and it will do nothing, so if it locked I had to pull it into MF and then pop back up to AF. Had to do this at least 5-10 times last weekend.

Lol,I know you'd buy new.I do feel that if properly used and taken care of as you would,a new Tokina lens would probably last you a life time with no trouble. It's a tough choice,Good luck.
