Now that I've had this lens a few weeks, I thought I'd start a lens specific thread for those interested in this lens. There is not much in the way of technical reviews on this lens yet, but I'm certain it will be well recieved. The build quality is good for it's price point, very similar to the new 24-85. The zoom and focus rings are snug and smooth. It's very compact and light for an Ultra-wide, won't mind walking around much with this lens. My main concern with this lens was extreme corner and edge sharpness, starting out at 18mm it is important that those edges are "useable". I'm pleased to report it is very good in the corners and extreme edges. There is some softness at the extremes as expected, but nothing that needs to be cropped off. Center and mid frame sharpness is excellent. Distortion is very well controlled for the focal range and easily corrected. Color rendition and contrast is excellent also.

The shots below are uncropped (except to level the horizon where needed) and no distortion correction was applied. Please note that the ground was very uneven, so some of what you are seeing is not distortion. These are all 3 shot HDR's at 18mm. I put a couple "finished" crops in my "occasional Posting" thread.

Re: New Nikon 18-35g Thread

My first UW was the Nikon 10-24 for Dx; In comparison, the widest focal length is definitely more usable on the 18-35 and it is sharper across the entire range with less distortion. I would attribute this to the more challenging physics in making the Dx lens wider (15mm with the crop factor).

I think Nikon has made a great lens here and intentionally handicapped it so it can't compete wit the 16-35 and 14-24.

I think the images you've displayed here are comparable to my 16-35mm pics...I assume the lens is cheaper...

$750 US as opposed to $1250 US for the 16-35. I bought this to "hold me over" until a new UW prime comes out, so did not want to put out that much.

Out of curiosity, if I have an 18-55 and 18-105, why would I need this lens? Not a troll, just trying to see if I really need another wide angle.

The newer 18-35 G is made to cover the full frame FX sensor. Your present lenses are fine for cropped sensors DX so there would be NO reason for you to get that newer lens unless you are planning to upgrade to a full frame camera in the near future.

Hope this clears it up for you.
