    Thank you everyone, especially my husband who sat for the picture. This is his sinister or homicidal look. I went to the strobist training videos on beginning flash and this was one of their lighting setups.

    Would you please explain your light modifiers, Robin? That might help some newbies dip their toes into the water!

    I used a single light with a soft box (same can be achieved with a light and umbrella) about 45 degrees, maybe a little more, to the right side of Andy and about 45 degrees up. I was following the directions from the following link. I think it is the 4th video in this series.
