"Flash"
- Needa's Choice

READ THE FOLLOWING. THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT!!

*****************************************************************************************
Flash Photography. This week there is not a specific subject, BUT it is about technique. You must use a flash(s). It can be the built in flash, a hot shoe flash, or Off Camera Flash (OCF). Along with your posted photo, you need to include details about your flash technique. Did you use Front Curtain sync, Rear Curtain sync, Fill flash, etc. Let's see how creative you can be! Color, B&W, HDR...anything goes!
*****************************************************************************************
DO NOT SHOOT OR POST IMAGES UNTIL WEDNESDAY Jan. 11
This early announcement of the topic is to give a little think time, before the challenge begins. Photos must be taken and submitted between 00:00 UTC of the start date and 00:00 UTC of the end date.

The Rules

1. Photos must be captured with a Nikon and appear in the thread with EXIF info in order to be considered for the challenge. If the forum EXIF viewer does not show for any reason, listing the camera and capture date/time below the photo is acceptable. Listing exposure info, lens & focal length is encouraged so others can learn.

2. Any photo submitted for a weekly challenge must be taken during the dates specified in the challenge thread.

3. Only one photo entry per member for each week, unless otherwise noted.

4. All regularly active members of Nikonites are allowed to participate, including moderators and administrators.

Voting

During the submission & like periods, please click the Thanks/Like button to vote for your favorite images. You can vote for as many as you want! At the end of the week, you will have the opportunity to vote again for the top 3 photos for this challenge!

There will be no cash or prizes awarded for the Weekly Photo Challenges, unless specifically noted by the site administrator.

Any photo will be accepted for the challenge. Edited or straight out of the camera, it does not matter. You are left with complete freedom to do whatever genre of photography you wish to do, and your own interpretation of the challenge subject.

This is a do-over of a shot I tried a couple years back. Blue soup bowl in the kitchen sink with the faucet dripping into it. Camera on tripod about 2 feet back with hot shoe flash. No special flash settings. ML-L3 remote for convenience. Manually focused on the spot and took about 50 snaps. Got 10 or so that were worth a second look. Cropped close and pumped up in LR.

DSC_7543+Sculptures 3light manual-0003 NIKED.jpg

Part of my "getting to "M" with OCF" project.

Shot these sculptured birds. Bought them as a Christmas present for my wife from a local artist Loretta Kyle, they are done in chlorite.
Shot with three OCF using Nikon's CLS and a muted on camera pop up as controller. Post processing with Corel Aftershop and Paintshop where I 'Niked" it a bit.

Here is the set up.

Your basic kitchen table - bedsheet set up. Put the Metz 58 in soft box, SB600 with a bounce back mod and SB700 in a small disk softbox (just to the right of the shot). The small LED flashlight (under the softbox) was to aid in focus when the lights were off. room lights reflected on the sculptures, and the focus aid light (red matrix) also showed up in reflection. The LED just under the softbox provided enough light to get the focus but blended in with the softbox flash so i could not detect it in the image. It is a smaller softbox I bought not that long ago. Liking the compact size and how a single speedlight fills it well - in this shot it appears that the light is pretty even and 'soft'. Flashes were manual set - no I didn't record the settings for this particular shot, working on the 'trial and error' method of exposure control. Most of the time I was dealing with 1/16 to 1/64th power. Anything close to half power this close to a shiny subject didn't work.

From the EXIF I can say it was shot in Manual at f/4.5 on a Siggy 50 Art lens on a D610. Slowed the shutter to 1/50.

Using flash to create a shadow.

Flash.jpg

Flash was camera left about 45 degrees to doll and pointed down about the same to create the doll's shadow. Soft shadows on the opposite side of the doll were create by some bounce do to proximity to a wall. Vignetting was added to enhance the spotlight like look.

I hoped to revisit this shot to get what I wanted, but time did not allow it...............
so this is a shot with OCF at full power, being handheld with head at 45° with white reflector card pulled out. Due to an uncontrolled triggering from the shutter release cable and me trying to get it under control, the flash was being waved around wildly. In my face, on the ceiling, toward the wall, etc. This shot resulted in one of the camera clicks.

So, speedlight on the hot shoe, with a snoot, set on TTL. Animal posed on a tall table against a slanted white ceiling, with the speedlight angled up at a 45 degrees, bouncing the light down on the boa. Exposure and flash both set -.3

I got a new LED Macro Flash, it is cool because it has 3 LED circular heads. So to try it out, I went out in the snow, blew bubbles, let them freeze, and shot the bubbles with my new flash. If you look really close, the LED flashes look like tiny snow flakes.
