"Flash" - Shootraw's & Felisek's Choice

Note about the combined choice: @ShootRaw and @Felisek tied in the final round voting of the City Lights Challenge. The Challenge Team, after much discussion, opted to declare them co-winners of the challenge and let each pick a topic. The idea being the Team would them combine the two topics into one. The combining was easy, because both picked "Flash". :)

DO NOT SHOOT OR POST IMAGES UNTIL WEDNESDAY Jan 7
This early announcement of the topic is to give a little think time, before the challenge begins. Photos must be taken and submitted between 00:00 UTC of the start date and 00:00 UTC of the end date.

This photo challenge is "Flash". Turn that speedlight on and let us see your best flash (lighting, we are talking lighting here, just making sure). One flash, two flash, three flash or more, macro flash, big flash, little flash, on camera or off, wired or wireless, front lit, side lit, back lit, high key, low key. Let's see how creative you can be! Color, B&W, HDR...anything goes!

The Rules

1. Photos must be posted to the thread in order to be considered for the challenge. No gallery images or off-site links (flickr, 500px, etc) will be accepted.

2. Any photo submitted for a weekly challenge must be taken during the dates specified in the challenge thread.

3. Only one photo entry per member for each week, unless otherwise noted.

4. All regularly active members of Nikonites are allowed to participate, including moderators and administrators.

Voting

During the submission & like periods, please click the Thanks/Like button to vote for your favorite images. You can vote for as many as you want! At the end of the week, you will have the opportunity to vote again for the top 3 photos for this challenge!

There will be no cash or prizes awarded for the Weekly Photo Challenges, unless specifically noted by the site administrator.

Any photo will be accepted for the challenge. Edited or straight out of the camera, it does not matter. You are left with complete freedom to do whatever genre of photography you wish to do, and your own interpretation of the challenge subject.

ARE YOU READY??

Can the flash provided by something other than a flash? Or does it have to be a flash from some sort of a flash attachment? I have an idea, but can't disclose it as I may want to try it. Ha!

All sorts of stuff have been used through the history of photography, from flash powders to single-use bulbs to flash cubes to the modern speedlights and studio strobes. So, I'm thinking if it flashes, and the photographer is somehow in control of the flash or timing of the shot, then it should be OK. Bearing in mind of course that the judges (those who like and vote) will make the final decision as to how well the final image fits the theme.

@wornish Did you experiment to get to 1/8 power, knew it would work from prior experimenting (experience), calculate it all out or use some other method??

The short answer is experiment. I don't use flash very often and needed to learn again. I started in manual mode at 1/64 power and did a test , then increased the power, then overdid the power ! Then got it about right. The great thing about digital is it costs you nothing to take multiple shots. Shooting the flash through a sheet of ordinary printer paper and some extreme contrast post processing and it's done.

I usually use a Sekonik L358 Flash meter but today it was cold but brighter than normal. Here is the setup I mounted a flash on the grill and set it to ch. A from the D7000 I set the onboard SB700 to Commander but no flash and pointed the head to the remote flash on the porch. I am shoot inside of patio door; it is cold.

The Dark Horse

Moving at 35 MPH and a total length of 74 feet 4 inches the SD70 Locomotive is not a easy horse to tame in the dark, unless you use at least two off camera Speedlights at full power. I would have used a third Speedlight but the cold weather got to my trigger batteries. Note to self, ALWAY check your batteries before you go out. (I hate when that happens)

I admit I have shamelessly copied the idea presented earlier on Nikonites, though I cannot remember who did it then (sorry!). On the other hand, hasn't almost every picture we take been already taken by someone somewhere before?

WOW!! Everyone is stepping up to the challenge this week. Some original creative stuff. Which reminds me of a thought that adding a new or different technique helps foster creativity.
