Budget Wedding Lens

I'm shooting a indoor wedding for a good friend in next month in October. I normally don't do weddings, but the couple are unable to afford a photographer otherwise so I agreed to do it for them. I have photographed weddings in the past but not as the professional photographer more as a guest or back-up. I have a Nikon D5300 with a 18-55mm kit lens, 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8, 55-300mm 4.5. I know I have the portraits covered with my primes, but I'm wanting a budget friendly zoom lens for the ceremony itself. I tried out my 55-300mm at the last wedding I attend and it worked ok, although a bit slow in the low light and seemed almost too much. I would like more of a mid-range zoom if possible. I do attend a lot of weddings or gatherings it seems so I'm sure it whatever I get would get used quite a bit. Any suggestions on a good zoom or budget friendly lens? Thanks in advance everyone. :D

I have noticed that most professional here use a flash. It is either an umbrella type remote triggered or on external flash with a large diffuser.

Once you have enough light with the flash, you can use any decent zoom, even the kit 18-55 is good enough with flash assist. If you want to invest in a zoom a 24-70 f 2.8 is ideal for weddings, whether the Nikon or third party version.

The 17-50 2.8 Tamron is excellent. It has VR and gives you a nice zoom range for the DX range. Of course, one never has enough lenses... But I used to do weddings with film, Hasselblad with 3 lenses, no Zooms in those days. It can be done.
