Wedding Shoot

Took the plunge recently and partnered up with a local photographer for some wedding shoots. He's a great guy (with the exception of his Canon affliction) and has been shooting weddings on his own for a couple years now. We've decided to tag team several upcoming events. Great experience and exposure for me and he gets that second shooter he's been needing for a while. That, and getting paid to shoot doesn't suck, either!

Here's a few quick edits from yesterday's wedding. Whatcha think? Feedback welcome!

These last two images, what's the light source that's flaring into the lens? Is that the sun, or a flash? With the background being so dark, I'm assuming it's OCF located behind the newly weds?

I love that first image. No first look I take it, just the pre-ceremony prayer/hand holding?

Very nicely done.

#2 seems a tad washed out though, would like to see his hair a bit darker. But that is just my opinion, overall great work.

Second last one, the light spot on their hands I think could be removed, it is a bit distracting IMO, otherwise I really enjoyed them and are quality photos.

Thanks, Charlie. The first one was a "no-look" thrown together right before the ceremony started because the bride changed her mind on where we were originally set up to shoot it. Imagine that; a bride changing her mind. LOL.

The flair is from my bare OCF set at 1/1 and up on a nightstand at about 8'. Those are indoors at the reception.

Nicely done.

Thanks, George.

As usual with your work, some very nice shots.

Thank you, Walt!

Really like #3

Thanks, Pete.

#2 and #3 are killer !

Thanks, Daz!

Nice ones! No doubt they will be thrilled!

Thank you, Cindy!

Thanks, Scott! I have to agree with the need for darker hair and less wash-out on that top left corner. Re-edit to soften and darken that to come.

dont get the first one ..explain it to me...looks like she is hiding from him and there is a knife out of view

LoL. It's a "no-look" shot that some consider tradition; where the bride and groom hold hands and say a prayer before the ceremony. It's there last chance to talk to each other before the wedding starts.

Thank you. I'll take a closer look at that spot to see what I can do.

I really appreciate all the thoughts and feedback so far!! You all are great!!!

Here's a couple more quick edits (when I mention quick edits, I mean no more than 15-20 minutes edit time. I get it to the point that other than needing some final clean up or tweaking, the image concept and style is complete).

One HUGE thing I realized during this last shoot was that my camera/lens set-up is SO terrible for this kind of professional work!! The time for a D750 and 24-70 f/2.8 is here!! No doubt a 70-200 f/2.8 isn't far behind. I was blown away at what I thought my lens performance was compared to how it really performed in the field under these situational conditions.

This no look thing must be something that does not happen in the UK...so I still don't get it ....we have a policy of if a photo does not flatter the people in it we don't present it ..for me its out. All the other facial expressions are fabulous.

It's an old superstition that if couples see each other on their wedding day before the ceremony starts, it will bring bad luck.

Nicely done, David! I LOVE her ring. Would have liked slightly more DOF for it, but it's still a great shot! Thanks for sharing. Since you are using a 35mm-70mm on DX, you will notice a big difference in your field of view using a 24-70mm on FX. You won't be able to get those mid-telephoto views that you currently get with your DX body. Yes, you have definitely reached the point of moving to better gear! ;)

The old superstition here (in the US) of the groom not seeing the bride on the wedding day until the ceremony is giving way to a couple different alternate options. Dave captured the "no-look", where the groom still doesn't get to see the bride, but they do get a moment together prior to the ceremony. The other is the "first-look" where the bride and groom have a private moment before the ceremony, once both are dressed up and ready. Neither are considered formals, they aren't posed or directed, rather are candids to capture the moment ... usually in a photojournalist style.

In my experience, regardless of whether the no-look/first-look scene was part of the plan, the plan didn't take into account WHERE this would take place. Consequently, there's a lot of scrambling to get a scene, keep the bride hidden so that the groom doesn't see her, keep the guests away so that it's a private moment, etc. etc. Part of the pageantry of the event.

this was a old superstition when I got married I the UK, I remember my parents telling me this too when they got married in the 50's.

Would not work in the UK as the groom is always at the front waiting for his bride who then walks with her father to meet him. They never get near one another prior to that point. I get it now but why do they look so sad?

Sure it would work, just as it does here, if you plan it accordingly. You shoot the scene before the groom goes in for the beginning of the ceremony and waits for the bride to enter. This was planned that way and had a much better location set up and ready; however, at the last second the bride decided not to go to that spot because she didn't want ANYONE to see her before the ceremony. We had to rush the groom over to the bridal party waiting room and quickly grab a couple shots.

I also dont don't think they look sad at all. More that they both are grasping what is about to take place and the thoughts of their amazing journey are racing in their heads faster than they can comprehend. The talk was soft, sweet, and very touching. You may not see it, but they will.
