Wanted: AF Teleconverter

I am an enforced early retiree and as such on a tight budget!

I am after an AF Teleconverter, preferably a 2x(but 1.4x will do!), at a budget price.

Age and visual condition is not an issue, as long as it is AF and working!

I am in the UK, but will be willing to pay snailmail(cheaper) rates to get one from overseas.

I hope that one day my wish will be fulfilled!

MfG Andreas

p.s. Any make will do!

I don't believe all teleconverters are interchangeable. Certain ones work with specific models of lenses. If you own Nikon lenses, you may want to stick with Nikon teleconverters that work with those lenses. If you have Tamron or Sigma lenses, those might take different teleconverters.

Can you tell us what lenses you own? That might help narrow down the model of teleconverter.

Nikon 18-70mm G and 55-200mm VR

As far as I can tell from the Nikon Lens-Teleconverter (TC) compatibility charts, neither of your lenses is compatible with any Nikon TC. This is due to insufficient space between the rear lens element and the front element in the TC, and connections are not possible at all without damaging one or the other component in the combination.

You might send Nikon a note asking the question, but, were I in this situation, I wouldn't buy a TC until someone proved that either of your lenses is compatible with one.

Good luck.

Read ALL the caveats... this is as close to what you're looking for... read all the reviews too...Just remember, you're comparing a $130 TC with Nikon's TCs (which won't work with your lenses) at $500...

Good luck...

It's been my experience that even the best teleconverters don't work well, and seldom as advertised. Your mileage may vary, of course, and I hope that it does ... but I've been disappointed with everything that I've tried to date, regardless of what the charts say. Better to take your time and go after the lens you really want, even if you have to scrimp.

I have the Kenko 1.4X PRO 300 and have never actually used it in a real world shot. The quality really suffers and you lose so much light that the autofocus does not work or does not work well. With your older camera and lenses you would be better off just cropping. Save your money up for a longer lens.

I've been back and forth on whether to get a TC or not.
There are people who do not like them (as posted above)
Yet I see some great shots taken with TC's.

Given the risk I'm looking at a Kenko 1.4 300 - just like the one mention above that has had no real world use.

But I understand it has to be used on a camera where the A/F system is accommodating. and the lens is fast enough to live with a loss of a stop or two.

I've been looking at buying one used - see them for $95-$145ish used.

I think used vendors will ship it to you snail mail

Could be worse, order from the orient and wait on the slow boat from China which takes a month or two to get here.

I never had any luck with it on My D7100 using the 70-300. I have only tried it with y Tamron 150-600 on my D750 and it has no auto focus at all on it but that is probably the lens. I guess I need to try is with the 70-300 but not need there since I have the 150-600. I would like to have a good TC for use with the 150-600 though.

It's going to be a "give and take" on TCs. I have a 2x Pro-optic tc. I've used it on my D3100 with the 55-300 lenses. It worked good on bright sunny days. But I've lost some good shots because it either took too long to focus. Or didn't focus at all. The IQ is going to suffer a bit as well. I got mine on sale for 80.00 a couple years ago. I haven't tried it yet on my D7100.

That Tamron Starts at F5... and at the 600mm end, you're at F6.3... add any kind of TC to that and you're gonna be in "iffy" auto-focus range pretty quickly...

The old line that you get what you pay for rings true here. While teleconverters are spotty, in my experience, the Nikon version does seem to work better, or at least more consistently, than the aftermarket offerings. If you decide to pull the trigger, it's worth ponying up the additional bucks for the brand name.
