Lens Focus Noise

While learning about shooting video with my D7200, I'd read lens focus noise was a pretty typical issue with the on camera mics. So I decided to buy one of these:

Unfortunately, I still get lens focus noise. I've tried lowering the mic sensitivity, changing from wide range to voice range, using the wind cover, removing the mic from the hotshoe, and trying different lenses; all with no luck. The only thing that helped was holding the mic 8"+ away from the camera.

Is this just the way things are? Anything else that I can try?

Remove the mic from the camera. If there's nothing solid between them to transmit the vibration, you won't pick up the focus motor noise. Move it several feet away from the camera.

As I stated in my original post removing the mic from the hotshoe has no effect until it's 8"+ away from the camera.

The other option is manual focus, which is what I do for static interview footage.

Most of the suggestions that I’ve found recommend having a separate audio track recording anyway, noting that the audio recorders and line input on DSLRs are not that great. In that case, using the built-in mic for reference audio is fine, because it’s just used to sync the two recordings together.

I haven’t gone that far yet, but instead have been using a wireless lav mic for better audio, and manual focus to keep focus hunting out of the equation.
