Mic For Interviews

So, basically we've been doing these interviews with the coaches and players at the basketball games I've been shooting and so far we've been using my DSLR or a smartphone to record them.

I think you can guess how well that's been going audio-wise. Is there a microphone like the ones usually used in interviews that I can connect to my Nikon through the microphone port or wirelessly?

There some small shotgun mics that do quite good. They mount where the flash mounts and they will point where the camera is pointing. I use one when I do have to do any sort of interview

Best to go with a radio mike for the person in frame and a wired mike for yourself ..have had many over the years but the 860 MHz ones I have now ..quite cheap work brilliant. Look at the Tascam D60 mixer to sort out the sound.

How are they in terms of filtering out background noise?

The directional ability of the shotgun mike will not pick up side noise so that is your filter.

Shot gun mics have a very narrow aperture so any misalignment with the sound source means big loss in level. They should only be used in cases you have a boom operator who can keep it close and pointed on axis to the source constantly. The key is having the mic close to the source for noise reduction, no more than 1 foot from his mouth unless the ambient sound level is high, like crowd noise. Is a person doing a stand-up where the interviewer can hold a hand mic so it is self-mixed...one single audio feed so no mixer or multi-track record is needed. A cardioid pattern hand mic is better at rear rejection than say, a wireless clip on electret-condenser element mic(which tend to be omni-directional so sensitive to crowd noise if too far from his mouth) that you attach to his shirt, but those have an advantage in being cheap, good fidelity and since clipped to the sound-source, the levels remain fairly constant.
What separates pro and amateur videos is the audio more than video.
