Like with photo editing, what is it that you're looking to do?

I use Adobe Premiere, primarily due to past experience with that tool and also because it's included in my Creative Cloud subscription (I'm not using the Photography specific CC subscription, instead one of the levels that includes Illustrator and other tools).

I use Premiere Elements. I haven't used it much for editing, more for splicing video segments. Have used it to create photo slideshows as well.
FWIW - if you have a Mac iMovie does a decent job and is a free download from the Mac App Store.

Forgot about those two ... iMovie (for Mac) and whatever Windows Movie Maker turned into (on the Windows side) are also good starting points for free/basic functionality.

I've used both iMovie and Windows Movie Maker. iMovie has much more functionality than Movie Maker. If only Mac hardware was more reasonably priced...
The other thing to keep in mind is computer hardware. If you're going to be doing much video editing/rendering you'll want a reasonably powerful Intel core i5 (or a newer i3) and 8gb of ram. And 64bit Windows. All the newer Mac OS X versions are there already. If you're using Photoshop and/or Lightroom then you likely have a decent system already.

Davinci Resolve is free as long as you don't need De-Noise and to be able to have 4 people editing the same project at the same time. Another free option is Hitfilm 3.

Hi,

I am a Nikon DSLR owner and Videography enthusiast and had been using the Sony Movie studio Platinum 12 till recently when I migrated to Sony Vegas Pro 16. I have faced a few glitches with editing .MOV files on these Sony NLEs and was wondering if you have faced the same situation and if so did you convert to a friendly codec? If you did convert to a friendly codec could you give me some info as well as the conversions software you are using.

Thanks

George
