Need advice for TeleConv to use with AF-S 55-200mm DX VR lens

Hi Folks, I am looking at increasing my focal length beyond 200mm for those rare occasions - most outdoor activities (car racing, distant objects, etc). I was hoping to save some $$ and use a TC that would get me between 300-400mm. I use a D5100, so weight is also important. Anyone used a TC on this type of lens, any suggestions as to which work best? Thx

Very simply, don't, Nikon TCs are not compatible with this lens.
However if you really want to use one, in general Kenko converters sometimes can be used with lenses not compatible with Nikon's own converters. A 2x converter will push you to f/8 or f/11. You will probably have to focus manually and VR may not work. The picture quality will also suffer greatly.

You may be better off taking the money the converter will cost and trade or sellthe 55-200 and get a 70-300VR.

Nikon does not recommend using a teleconverter with any of their zoom lenses or any lens with a max apperature slower than f/2.8, although I know a number of folks who use the TC1.4 with the 300mm f/4 and get great shots.

Here is a link to the Nikon TC compatability chart.

This is Nikon's official position on Nikon TC compatability with their lens.

Wow! Thanks for that Colin.
I love my 70-300 too much to be playing around with something Nikon does not recommend.
Will just sit quietly till i can get myself a 400 or 500mm :p

Anything greater than F/2.8 for example:: 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6. So you need a lens that is equal to or less than F/2.8
