I have one, got it when I got the D200, it was the only lens I had for a while. Not real fast at f3.5 so indoors a flash is usually required. Great range, pretty wide at 18 for my indoor real estate shots, it is the widest lens I own, wishing for a 12-24. I have used it for some portrait shots before I got the 50 and it worked well. Overall I find it a very useful lens. They do seem to loosen up a little and slide out on their own when carrying it around pointed down. I'll post up some portrait shots that I think came out pretty well.

I have owned 3 of these lenses and if you are shooting on DX body it covers almost all my needs for day to day shoots it's an amazing piece of glassware imo.

I have one and use it when changing lenses might be inconvenient (e.g. guided tours, quick family snaps) or challenging (e.g. first day in Venice last fall was very rainy). This past March I had to take a quick trip to Paris, Vienna and Bratislava (in 6 days!) for work and didn't have room for a full kit so I brought just this lens. I wound up taking less than 100 images but got one keeper. Otherwise, my 17-55 is my go to lens. I purchased the 17-55 used from someone moving to FX and got a very good price. Might be something to consider if you are planning on staying DX.

Also, there are rumors (Recap | Nikon Rumors) that there might be a FX lens of similar capabilities imminent.

I have the version 1 of this lens before. I'm not quite satisfied with its IQ @ 105mm up to 200mm.
Sold it and re aligned my lens line up. I guess you cant get everything with this jack of all trade lens.

I have one that came with the D300S, If there is a perfect lens, which I doubt, this comes pretty close. Love mine. Use it more than all the rest put together.
