Trade kit 18-55 VR & 55-200 VR for a Tamron 18-270!?

Here i am, wondering if it would be worthwhile trading in my two lenses for a Tamron 18-270.... I get tired of having to change lenses when i need more focal length and would rather have an all in one. I have read quite a few reviews on Tamrons latest 18-270 and it seems to be decent. Though, i like to do macro and i was wondering if anyone has experience with this lens while doing macro? I also know that when a company tries to make an "all around" type product, some things are a bit sacrificed. That being said, i am not sure if i should give up my two lenses - which do their jobs very well - for one lens that does both jobs perhaps not as good.... I tell you, the dilemas in life!!!:rolleyes:

This is hardly a dilemma. Here is the solution. If you're sick of changing lenses, Sell your DSLR and buy a P&S. This full range mega zooms are not the greatest, especially in 3rd party form. You get what you pay for. There is not one lens that can do EVERYTHING and/or do everything well. If you MUST have a all in one walk around lens, at least opt for the Nikon version. I don't particularly care for mega zooms at all, but a friend has the 18-200 and he likes it. To each their own i guess.

Thanks for the advice Joe. To elaborate on the "get tired" part, i meant that there have been a few instances where i saw the opportunity to take a great shot, but i needed more focal length to get it. By the time i change the lens, the opportunity is gone - i guess that is just photography for you. I beleive a DSLR is for me and in terms of what i shoot, a P&S would be rather useless to me. I do realize that there is not a perfect "one lens" solution and these lenses tend to sacrifice certain things. Again, i definetly want the flexibility of being able to have different lenses and to explore - eventually - prime lenses, wide angle, etc. I just thought an all in one would be great for the days i am out plane spotting; therefore, i would not miss any opportunity by changing lenses. Sticking with Nikon is good advice as well. Thanks for your input.

Found a review of the Tamron lens.

Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO review: Digital Photography Review

I have both the kit lens and the 55-200. I keep them over the Tamron. YMMV.

I saw a post at Nikon Rumors about a Nikon 18-300. That would be my choice assuming it's any good.

missed opportunities is just the name of the game. It happens to the best of us. I think just preparring yourself better helps...if you know you are plane spotting, toss the 200 on there. In my opinion, for what some of those mega zooms cost, the money could be better saved/put towards better glass. Im not knocking all 3rd party glass. Heck, 2 of my favorite lenses are 3rd party. (sigma & tokina) but they are pro grade lenses. I think with that tamron, you will be sacrificing a lot more than you think.

Yep, you are right. The more and more i look into it, i don't feel comfortable doing away with the lenses i have now. Thanks for all the input:)

Sorry just noticed D5100 in your name.
I bought a D40 body on craigslist for $200. I keep one lens on the D40 and the other on my D90. I carry both. Was cheaper than the bigger lens. And better optically.

Just an idea.
