Wondering, on the 200-500mm 5.6 lens, what Sport mode does? I'm shooting birds lately, so assume it would be useful. I assume it has something to do with VR, but wondering what exactly it does. Thanks.

Standard VR is from a stationary position, as in your feet are on the ground. Sport mode is if you are moving too, as in from a boat or a moving car as well as panning.

TwistedThrottle has the right answer. For birding, Sport mode works well if you are tracking birds in flight. I used it last weekend photographing eagles hunting at my local hydroelectric dam (Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G).

I also used the "Mode 2" on my Sigma 150-600mm C lens, which is the sport mode of that lens. I used a monopod on that lens but I was tracking a lot.
