This may well be a lost cause.. but can't hurt to try?
I got this lens free - in 3 pieces- with the purchase of a D70 for my daughter. I cleaned and reassembled it and it is actually a very nice lens- very sharp and takes great pictures!
The problem is that it will not autofocus AT ALL! it just bounces from min to infinity and back over and over and over. I have tried the switch from LV to S tricks, cleaned contacts, everything i can think of.
Manual focus works great...

Any ideas or just leave well enough alone and focus manually?

Ooops.. failed to mention that I am using the lens on my D300 as she did not want to mess with it... That said tho, I have several other lenses that will autofocus on the body without any issue

Does this lens have a focus motor in it? If so, the motor might need to be replaced or repaired. If it's an AF lens with an aperture ring, it shouldn't have a focus motor. If the lens lacks the aperture ring, it should have a focus motor.

It does lack the aperture ring so I am left to assume that it does have the focus motor? It zips back and forth quite well - and thru the lens it goes in and out of focus quite well, just never settles. I have read in my research that there is a magnetic tape that may be dirty that could also cause this behavior?
