That "new" 400mm f/2.8 ED-IF AIS sure did not disappoint!

I caught this Tri-color Heron stalking a fish yesterday with the D850. Sharp as a razor!

Nicely done! Curious which lens you used - it lists 55mm. Is that a manual prime or something else?

All of my Nikkors are manual focus AI or AIS so I have to input their particulars into the CPU menu routine in the camera to get the proper EXIF. To be perfectly honest, I really can't be bothered, I have never been much concerned with EXIF data anyway. This was taken with the 400mm f/2.8 ED IF AIS Nikkor and the D850.

That is a fantastic shot, and is a very sharp image. With the title of the thread, I would've thought that you used a 400mm lens for the shot! ;)

I actually did take it with the 400mm f/2.8, not the 600mm f/4 as I said in a previous post, my bad. And I agree, it is MERCILESSLY sharp! At 100% crop with the D850 it is amazing.

I'm assuming that with the focusing screen and the manual focus lens, that there is no need for AF Fine Tune, either. For slowly moving or stationary targets, you are the focus system. It would be tougher, though, to track a subject moving toward or away from the camera. Have you tried that with this combo?

I really do see the perfection in that lens, I am less than 1 year into a Digital Nikon body. Due to the fine MF Nikkor glass I have, it was a must to find a D body that took & worked with my lenses.

Thanks for sharing your findings & photo makes me want one for sure.

Mike :)

Not as tough as you think when you have been doing it for 46 years like I have. I just kind of get into a zone and use the ground glass to focus.

That was my approach as well. I already had a ton of MF Nikkors and wanted to get an FX body. I did not want to get a DX body and turn my workhorse 18mm f/3.5 AIS Nikkor into a 27mm. At the time the D700 was a perfect fit. I still have it!
