Well guys I puller the trigger on a 200-500 5.6 demo from Milton Camera that they had o ebay. It will be here today, so I am shopping for an extender. Any thoughts on the 1.4 II or III version? In a previous thread you guys talked me into getting an extender for my new lens. My kids are thanking you for helping me spend their inheritance.

I believe this might be from Nikon Canada - it's a teleconverter compatibility chart. I don't have that lens but have the TC-14E II. If you look at the chart, you will see this model teleconverter is more compatible with the list of lenses than the III. I've used the II with 3 different lenses without any issues.

This is good information. I did not know about it when I got the 1.4E-II version. I got it for the 200-500 which works fine, but I was hoping it would also work with my 70-300. It doesn't because of interference between the lens and the teleconverter. I still like it. Ha!

Well, I haven't tried a TC on my 200-500, but two people I shoot wildlife with both indicated that they were not at all pleased with the results when they did. Lack of sharpness and slow autofocus were their complaints.

You didn't mention a strap, and it's possible you are already aware, but please be sure to get some type of strap that connects to the tripod foot. That lens is too heavy to use a strap that connects to the body's camera strap lugs.

I use the combo a lot and AF definitely takes a hit.

"Being pleased" and "lack of sharpness" are ambiguous. One person's acceptable "pleased" and "sharp" won't be someone else's.

Ambiguous? I suppose, which would mean that your "just fine" from your first post won't be someone else's "just fine." OP asked for opinions, after all. :)
