Hi Guys
Just wondering if any of you have used a Nikon TC-14 E II extender with a Nikon 200-500 mm lens. Were there any problems?

You will only lose 1-stop of light with a 1.4x teleconverter so you'd be shooting at f/8. If you are in low light situations, you might find it won't achieve focus as quickly as it would on a bright day. But you could always remove it if necessary in those situations - or focus manually.

I am shooting with a 7200 so I can up the ASA to the point where low light will not be a problem.

harlerider, that isn't what I meant. When you add the teleconverter, the amount of light that reaches the sensor is less. It doesn't have anything to do with your ISO. If there isn't enough light hitting the sensor, the AF will go in and out trying to lock focus. I'm talking about photos later in the day when the sun is going down or early morning before the skies are really bright. Not really a deal breaker but just wanted you to be aware because you'd be shooting at f/8 for your widest aperture. Once the teleconverter is mounted, you won't be able to shoot at f/5.6, f/6.3, or f/7.1.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you were saying.

That's okay! Just wanted you to be aware. That said...if it was me, I'd be all over it wanting to give it a go! Unfortunately for me, a lens like this is too heavy. Previously I had tennis elbow surgery so am limited with weight. Like I said, if it starts getting too dark for the AF to work, then you could remove the teleconverter and see if you can achieve focus that way because you'd be at f/5.6. :)

It depends on what you mean by "problems".

I can't comment on the II. I'm using the TC 14E III not the II. Everything "works". AF works, exposure is fine. None of those kinds of problems.

But the image quality takes a hit. So does AF speed and performance. Wide open at 500 without the TC, I think the image quality of the lens is very good. It's got good contrast, sharpness, OOF areas are good. With the TC, all of that is less good. On my 70-200/2.8, my TC 14E III is terrific. Wide open it's great. It's so good I have never bothered to even look at the 300/4E. But it's just not as good on the 200-500 for me.

AF function depends a lot on the camera. Most of the mid- to upper-grade bodies won't have an issue, but the AF modules in entry-level bodies might.
