I wonder what price tag it will have. The 300mm f/4 PF comes in close to $2K. If the 500mm will be as good as the 300mm, then it would be phenomenal!

I can’t find the article right now, but I saw on a Japanese sight that it is likely going to be in the $4000 range, + or - ...

That looks like very good value in this day and age.

It's IQ will have to be superb to make it a lens to compete with Nikon's 200-500mm f/5.6 zoom. If the IQ is not better than that, IMO the zoom is the better choice at 40% of the prime's price. And you get a zoom to boot!

Or compete with the Nikon 300mm f/4 coupled with a 1.4 teleconverter. Sure, this combo isn't quite as long but is still spectacular.

Really excited about this lens. I think this prime comes in around 2 pounds lighter than the 200-500, which makes it a fantastic option for extended trips in the field and easier to handle when panning handheld.

Is that a button near the front element to trigger AF? Weight plus that flexibility makes it a win in my book (assuming it matches the IQ of the 200-500).

Great initial impressions from Steve:

The Function button in the front will be great for focusing. Looking forward to this one!

It's amazing the differences in technology compared to lenses from the '70s and '80s! Back then there weren't any bells and whistles with VR or even firmware. It will be interesting to see how people like it.
