It cost as much as I paid for my 2006 Accent new and my Hyundai is still running! That’s a lens that a pro whom makes his living can afford.

When you read the description it sounds great. Than that price that is almost 10 times the 200-500 and it weighs 2.6 lbs more. That must be some amazing tech that went into that lens.

How does this make sense when the Nikon 200-400mm f/4 has ED, VR, is (slightly) lighter and retails for ~$5,500 less?

Edit: 200-400mm not 200-500mm.

Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6 retails at 1,400.00

Nikon 100-400mm f/4 retails at 12,400...difference of 11,000. Even if you include the price of the TC (I have no idea what they go for) it's still more than a 5,500 dollar difference.

You haven't had your coffee yet, have you? Did you mean the f/5.6 model?

I was drinking coffee at the time but it was early. Still, this is just weird because I swear I was looking at a Nikon 200-500mm f/4 earlier this morning... I dunno. They say the mind is the first thing to go, though!

I’m pretty sure that I’m not the target demographic for this lens, but I would love to mount one on my D500 for a few days!!

I was telling Chris about this. He asked me if I wanted it. After I told him the price, he told me I really don't need it and I really don't.

I guess I don't see the advantage of this over the existing 200-400 which is supposed to be a great lens. A built in TC seems kinda' gimmicky to me, also.

The local camera store guy said it is aimed at pros who want less gear to juggle. Kinda makes sense.

I don't know that much about optics, but the first thing I thought was "Why teleconverter?Doesn't that reduce the IQ?"
Maybe it doesn't matter if the optics are good?

I think it’s all because Canon has similar zooms with built-in TCs, so Nikon felt they had to match.
