Thought i'd conduct this totally unscientific test of the Nikon 500mm f/4 vs the Sigma 150-600mm Sport (at 500mm). Taken at a distance of 42 feet with the same camera, simply changing the lens. Shot at f8, 1/1600th handheld. Both uncropped and cropped images have only had the highlights reduced to -50 in Lightroom to highlight the text as its a sunny day

The Nikons AF acquisition is pretty much instant and leaves the Sigma looking a bit asthmatic. This Sigma lens also has a AF 'freeze' sometimes. You have to focus on something nearer to go back to longer distance shots. The Sigma is quite light compared though and easier to handle

I'm with @mikew on this ... on the big computer monitor I like the 500mm/f4 better, but only because I can see the side-by-side. If I was paying for the gear out of my own pocket, it would be a tough decision.

It would only take a little less ability with the Nikon and who knows, the Sigma could come out on top.

I just had the chance to view the images on my 27" iMac. The differences are a bit more obvious than when I saw them on the iPad screen.
Still, for the difference in price, the Sigma is doing OK. I think my Tamron 150-600 G1 would fall a bit short of both of them.
