Hello Nikonites,
I just received my rental a "AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II" According to the specs the filter size says 52mm. But, it has a humungous lens and I cannot figure it out how to screw the 52mm filter.

Am i missing something ?

Thanks for your help, G

I think you are... The 200-400mm has a slot near the rear for 52mm drop-in filters, the front lens element is a protective element.

Good question. I wonder if it's like the 200mm/f2 lens? Adorama lists the filter size as 52mm, but the pictures of this lens would seem to confirm that the front lens glass is much larger than 52mm.

There is a threaded ring to screw the filter into just like those that screw onto the front of a smaller lens, and there is room to allow for some degree of variation in filter thickness so whatever 52mm filter you have will probably be fine. Filters are not lenses so do not defract the light so difference in thickness don't degrade the image quality. General transmission properties of the filter does however so getting good ones could make a difference in critical situations.
