Supporting lens on a tripod

Hello,
I have a D3300 camera and an AF-S NIKKOR 55-300MM 1:4.5-5.6G lens. When I use this combination in my hands it is fine. I support the lens with my left hand.
However, I have now bought a tripod and head, and I am concerned about the weight of the lens as it does not have a tripod support collar (I hope that is the correct term) and when I put it on the tripod the weight of the lens falls on the mechanism holding the lens to the camera.
Is this a problem? Should I try to get a collar?

Thank you for your help.

First off welcome to the forum. That lens is not that heavy and should not be a problem. I shoot with a 70-300 which weighs 26.3 oz where your 55-300 only weighs 18.7 oz. That lens should never be a problem. The only lens I have that needs a collar is my 150-600 which is long and weighs about 70 oz

Welcome to the forum. Like Don said, it should not be a problem. I have a 70-300mm that I shoot the way you have described. The only lens I have a collar for tripod mounting is the 200-500mm which like Don's long lens, is long and heavy.
The only thing I might add is that your tripod and head should be rated for the combined weight of your camera and lens. (Actually it is good to have a little fudge factor for additional weight).

That's a light lens, relatively speaking. Your tripod's head should NOT be falling down with that lens and camera... That's an indication that the tripod head is not strong enough...

It doesn't sound like the way that setup should work. Can you share a pic of the mechanism?

Thank you for your responses. I feel much better knowing that the combination will work,
Atleo, The tripod hasn't actually arrived yet. I have ordered a Sirui N-2004 tripod with a Sirui K-30 ballhead.
