My new 200-500mm will be at my local camera store on Tuesday! WooHoo!!! My question is did you fine tune the AF on your copies? At what focal length? My D500 is pretty excited about this new addition!

I have found that it is better to fine tune all zooms at their longest zoom. That is where it is most critical

It's up to you, of course, but yes... I would advise you check/adjust the auto-focus.

Since this is a Nikon lens, you'll be limited to a single adjustment. This being the case, I would test it at three different focal lengths, say... 200mm, 350mm and 500mm; then average those adjustment values to arrive at the Final Adjustment Number. Hopefully the adjustment values be relatively close to begin with. Since this is a Nikon lens, you'll be limited to a single adjustment.
That's how *I'd* do it but there are other theories on how this should be done... Google is your friend.

For long lenses I usually take a box with a bar code on it and photograph it at -10/-5/0/+5/+10. at about 40 ft away
At least 1/500 and f 5.6. Then examine the bar code on your computer at 100% and you will soon see where you are . Even being out by 2 can make a big difference. Then try photographing distant television antenna to confirm.
Do all this in JPEG at sharp +9 for consistency. Check again after about 1000 shots as the lens focus mechanism runs in /becomes freed up and the FFA changes ..some lenses more than others.
There is automatic fine focus adjust on the D500 but I am told its not ultra accurate....
