18-140 or 18-200 ??

I will be getting a new D7200 in the near future. I am trying to decide on either the 18-140 kit lens or buy the camera body and a 18-200 lens for it. I know on most kits they do not put a upgrade lens on them. I am really looking at the 18-200 for an all around walk around lens and general use. With the crop factor it pushes it up pretty good. Next year I am looking at the 200-500. With these two lenses I pretty much have it all covered that I need. Feedback on these lenses appreciated (18-140/18-200) Thanks Bill

I shot the D7100 with the 18-140 on it and loved the combination. When I moved up to the D750 my favorite wife took over the D7100 and wanted her 18-200 on it since she never will change lenses herself and makes me do it for her. In my opinion of looking at hundreds of photos from the same camera with both lenses I personally think the 18-140 is a better lens. Better IQ

Well I am happy with my 18-140 but cannot comment on the18-200, having never used one. I was somewhat concerned about moving from the 16-85 but my fears were unfounded and I appreciate the extra reach.

That's a myth . You can get the D750 with the 24-120mm f/4 "kit" lens, that blows both of those lenses out of the water IQ wise.

What if the D7200 came bundled with the 18-200 mm? Then you wouldn't buy it because it's a "kit" lens?

The 18-140 mm is a very nice and sharp lens. Practically lived on my D7100 when that was the only camera I had. Between that and the 70-300 mm VR I had a deadly combination in my hands.:encouragement:

Same as I used on my D7100. I did buy the 24-120 and use it on my D7100 before I bought the D750 and it was really a great lens but I really missed the low end from 18-24 using it on the D7100. But on the D750 is is outstanding.

Below is sample I took with my 18-200mm. Frankly, I do not see too much wrong with the IQ. I really love my 18-200, but perhaps I got an above average example.

I've got an early 18-200 that is excellent.

Yes, mine is also an early one. I got it as a kit lens on my D200. Maybe the early ones are better than the later ones?

Have you shot with the 18-140? That is what I am basing my opinion. Shooting both lenses on the same camera. Yes, my favorite wife shoots that lens and gets some great photos out of it and If I had not shot the same camera with the other lens I probably would have been very happy with it

Nice to see some love being given to the 18-200mm. I was starting to feel like the Lone Ranger because I have shot both lenses on the same camera and was starting to think I must have had an above average copy since I don't think it gave up any IQ to the 18-140mm. I don't know if the 18-200mm I was shooting with was an early release or not but it was impressively sharp; color and contrast were also quite good.

I had an 18-200 VRII from 2011-2013 when I only had a D7000. It was fine for what it was, a lens that can shoot everything (except macro). The more you ask a lens to do, the more you'll sacrifice in overall IQ. While the 18-140 won't shoot as long, I think it will provide better IQ than the 18-200. But, if you're not pixel peeping, you might not see much difference. If you become more serious about photography, you'll find that a superzoom (either one) and the 200-500 are not going to be enough. :) Good luck and happy shooting.

Yes. I have found out that my 18-200 is the early version, made in Japan, and it appears to have better IQ than the later lenses made outside of Japan.

If you're getting a D7200, take a look at the 24-120 f4 FX lens.
I tried the 18-140. It's good, however I'd rather spend money on FX glass.
The 24-120 f4 is expensive but I found an excellent example for $529.
Somebody's gonna say that isn't wide enough. I haven't found myself needing to go wider but I have a shorter zoom if I need it.

I love mine.

FWIW, since I got my D7100 I've been on a mission to upgrade to as much FX glass as possible.
