Extension tube

I am using D300 and AFS 70-300 mm VR lens. Sometimes, I feel just a bit 'short' and wish it was 500 mm. I read the kenko 1.4 extension tube is good. Anyone has experience and wish to share or any other suggestion?

You mean "tele extender". The extension tube is just what it says, a tube to get a closer minimum focusing distance. It is used for macro work. The tele extender is a tube with lenses that extends the focal length of the lens. Different brands offer different quality since there is a lens (or glass) put between your lens and the sensor plane.

I own the kenko 1.4 tele converter. Wont work with my 18-55 vr nor my 55-200 vr. So I'm assuming it will not work with your 70-300. How ever it does work with my sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and my nikon 70-210 f/4 and my nikon 50mm f1.8. It does try to work with the kit lenses but something weird happens when you try to shot ( with the mirror).

Hope this helps,
Michael

Yes I am refering to the tele-converter. Kenko has a 1.4 Pro 300 version which received good reviews. Michael, it seems that it didn't work for you. Can you share what are the problems you faced? Not able to auto focus?I do understand it will cause a drop in light so you need to ompensate with higher ISO, lower speed or bigger appeture.

It seems that when taking a pic, the mirror only partially retracts and when reviewed, half black and half the image. Checked to see if everything was seated properly and it was.

Hope this helps,
Michael

Dear Michael, I am revisiting this subject. When you say it didn't work with some of your lenses, what exactly happen? Is it got to do with focusing or what? I know if subject is under low light, even without the extender, focusing can be difficult.

I have a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and a Nikon AFD 50 f1.8, I am considering this extender because I think it can work on these 2 lenses. Simply because for f2.8 or below, even if I loose 1-2 f stops, I am still ok.

I am thinking of some wild life and birds are something that I wish I can shoot. But currently at 300 mm, by the time I crop, the image is not sharp enough.
