Nano Coating - How Important?

How important is Nikon's Nano coating on telephoto lenses greater than 400mm? I ask because when I used to shoot a Hasselblad, the T* coating was considered important on wide-angle and normal-angle lenses, but the T* coating was not considered by all to be that important on telephoto lenses..

My general feeling is that today's lens coatings are different, and help to increase contrast in some instances, in addition to reducing flare and ghosting.

What is your opinion?

My belief is that it is a bit more warranted on short tele/wide lenses due to the likelyhood that you would be more prone to shooting into direct light without a hood. Whereas when you are using a long tele, the benefits would be if the shot tends to cross into direct light (however you would more than likely be using a hood regardless for flare), this would be the only reasoning I see the use of nano coating being beneficial.

The 200-500mm doesn't have nano coating. I don't know what the difference would be if it had nano coating. I get nice contrast and flare is non existent . It does have a long assed hood!
