Lens question for you all

Good Day all,

I been throwing around the idea of selling my Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and buying a Tamron 15-30 F/2.8 Di VC USD for my D7100. I been mostly taking pics of vehicles, landscape and of my kids.

I have used my Sigma for 700-800 pictures and as soon as I purchased my 50 F/1.8 I haven't used the Sigma since. I don't shoot in rain or snow. I know I would miss the reach for my son's football, but I was looking at picking up the Tamron 150-600 F/5-6.3 Di VC USD eventually for shooting my son's football down the road for the extra reach.

So my question to all of you is, Is it a smart move to sell the Sigma and buy the Tamron 15-30? I find the 50 does not go wide enough for me on my crop body. Everything I look at for lenses is for future uae as well if I get a D750.

Let me know what you think about this and if I am off my rocker or not for thinking of this, and what do you think I should ask for the lens (always had a clear filter on front, always in a bag when not in use and never used in rain/snow, only sunny conditions, never dropped or banged).

Thanks everyone and I hope I made sense and not rambled on

Doug

What about picking up a nikon 35mm f1.8? They can be found for under $100.00 used. There is a guy on my local Craigs list trying to sell his sigma 70-200 f2.8 for $800.00 and its been on there for a while.

I dunno. A 70-200 is a completely different animal than a 15-30. To sell the former to buy the latter means you're giving up a lot of usable focal lengths.

If it were me, I'd keep the 70-200 for the vehicles and kids, and maybe find a good wide prime. Would autofocus be an absolute requirement? If not, there's lots of manual focus primes, even older glass, that might well fit your budget.

I've never tried either of those lenses, so I can only comment in a general sort of way! If your unhappy with that particular 70-200mm lens and plan to replace it anyway, and if the wide lens is one you know is a good one, then from what you said your future upgrades might be, I think it could be worth doing!:)
But you won't see a huge difference from a kit 18-55mm lens on your current Nikon, and will only see the real advantage of that ultra wide lens on the FX! So you might want to wait till your getting close to adding a D750 to your kit, before adding an ultra wide lens!:)

I hope it works out great for ya, no matter what you choose to do!:D

Ya I am not sure. Been tossing around the idea. I just got back from a family vacation and there was repeated times that I was wishing for something wider then my 50 for the family pics in front of trees and and such. This is the major reason why I was looking at getting the 15-30 F/2.8. Like I said the 7-200 has sat in my bag since I purchased the 50mm F/1.8G.

The auto Focus is not a huge deal to me, I like the handiness of it but I could focus myself. I have not had to manual focus before but I need to get use to it as I am wanting to get into astrophotography as well.

Thank you for the replies

Pull the trigger. Pick up the Tamron 15-30 and when you've got the money the Tokina 100mm, and a Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 and don't look back.

I have the Tamron 5-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD and think it is a very good lens and the VC makes it even better for hand held. That being said for me I would not sell a 70-200mm lens to purchase it as I would use both equally. Your situation seems to be different so if you are sure that you wont't miss the 70-200mm I would say go for it.
