Confused about my new 70-200 Tamron lens. D09 in the viewfinder.

This is probably a stupid question, but I am having weird autofocus issue with this lens. At about 5 feet all the way out at 200mm, the shutter wont release. It says in the viewfinder D09 and the flash symbol is going on and off. This is in manuel with the flash set to off. When I switch the lens to manuel focus I have zero issues and the shutter fires away. What am I failing at now?

At 5 feet it may not be achieving focus lock which, depending on the camera settings, may prevent the shutter release. I'm thinking switching off AF would disable the feature allowing the shutter to release.

What about longer distances?

Knowing camera might also help.

As @Eyelight says, every lens has a minimum focusing distance. Look in your manual for your Tamron to see what it is.

You might also have it set to Continuous focus with D9

Minimum focus distance at 200mm should be around 1.3m which is 4 feet something if I'm correct.

I know I have 2 options for release, I can set AF-S on either focus release or always release and the same again for AF-C. What the flash symbol is doing in your case I would not know. That should have nothing to do with focus.

Btw, are you sure the 09 you see isn't the images your buffer can store?

When I half-press the focus, in the D750 I see "r 11" in the left lower corner of the view (next to ISO), 70-200mm attached but that doesn't matter to this message. There's no flash symbol unless the view message isn't very clear and you mistake the r for the flash symbol. It only shows when you press, else it indicates the amount you can store on the card.
