Nikon AF D 80-200 f2.8 thoughts from uses?

I was pretty set on glass but have a shot at a super sweet deal on this lens. My 60 AF D f2.8 in trade with cash would conclude the deal.

Thoughts on this zoom?

I would primarily use it to shoot college hoops in a very well lit D1 arena with D700........along with other sports especially surfing.

A friend of mine uses this lens for shooting sports & critters. He sometimes uses a 3rd-party 1.4x TC and still gets great results.

Little bit heavy, but all the 70-200 zooms are quite hefty in size. Been using mine for years shooting auto sports and bike races. Have been using it for portraits as well. Bought it as a cheap super zoom, used it like a champion. If VR isn't your priority, it's great.

For your basketball use I'd consider it. Dark basketball courts requiring that hefty f2.8, players moving back and forth requiring you to make full use of that zoom range. I used it to shoot highschool gymnastics some years ago and it was always up for the task.

I was really interested in one myself a while back, but I never managed to get one. If you do buddy, I'd sure love to check out your shots with it! :)

I had one for a few years that I picked up for a measly $400 (AF-D 2-ring) in excellent shape from a motivated seller. It was awesome on my D7000. Sold it for $650 when I had a chance to get a 70-200 VRII (also mint) for $1400. Great lens for the money. You'll love it.

Nope still maintaining patience and to rocking my budget long zoom.

waiting for the perfect deal and decided I needed to keep the 60 2.8 D for my eBay / craigslist pics.

I also have come to like the 60 2.8 a lot for walk around/ no flash indoor sniping on the D700 with high ISO

when the right deal comes along I will add to my quiver!

Hi, I am also in a dilemma. To buy 70-200- f 2.8 VR-II or not. I am using D-7000 with AF-S Nikkor 18-200 1:3.5-5.6 G ED VR lens and not very happy with the results. I am a hobby photographer- based in Mumbai, India. I usually take pictures during holidaying or family functions. Here in Mumbai the lens costs equivalent to about US$ 2800/-. I shall sell my present lens if I purchase this 70-200 f 2.8 lens. Guys, need your suggestions... I can afford the price but for my kind of usage is the upgrade worth it? Please help.

Had a chance to fire away at some very active ducks and gulls in the local harbor today.....I especially impressed with capture a quite a few BIF's!

No time to post tonight but I will try to get a couple up later in the weekend!

Thanks to the folks who pushed me in this direction, the 80-200 AF ED D F/2.8 is marvelous!!! Man I really love Nikkor D glass.
