Well I have tried the Tamron out on varying conditions, and on the D800E I have found that the focusing can be a bit hit and miss. For static objects it works good, but through glass and low light it can be sluggish and even not focus at all. I am unsure if this is the camera or lens, but I have never had issues with the 80-400 or my 70-200... But in saying all this I have gotten some very nice sharp shots of birds, and have missed sharp shots...
So what is my verdict? This lens for the price is a winner, so much so that I have 'given away' my 80-400 VR to my mother as she will love that on her D80 (DX) which would be equalish to my 150-600. The photos I have gotten are sharp with the right technique. And I will continue to practice with this amazingly cheap lens, also I have sexy women and some strange guys coming up and saying "Wow what a lens!", or "This is the lens you need". One nice looking girl in very sort shorts even said "What a nice camera you have". What more can I say it is a winner.
Here are some examples with a crop...
