Yup,, AF is of the old screw type in which the camera has to focus, your 5300 does not have that mechanism and must have newer G type of lens
where the AF is built into the lens.

You have to buy a D7K series, D300, D700, D3,4, D700 or D600 D800,, but not 3K or 5K series Nikon body.

Great lens,, my advice is to upgrade to 7K family to open up a broader list of Nikkor lens.

B&H has a return policy. Just explain to them that you did not realize that Nikon D lenses will not autofocus on the 3xxx or the 5xxx bodies.

Or AF-S marked lenses, the s means that they have a servomotor inside the lens to drive the AF mechanism, had the same issues with a D40 :)

thanks alot stmv, I read some place it would work NOT SO, will return and get
a G type, Kenh

They do not make that lens in a G it is only a D so either use the manual focus or obviously return it. You could always upgrade your body so it will drive the focus system in the older lens's.

There actually was an AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8 that will autofocus on a D5XXX, D3XXX. In-fact there were several AF-S lenses that were not "G" lenses. AF-S is the key to whether a lens will focus on 3XXX or D5XXX, not whether it is a "D" or "G".

Correct. It was a poorly worded responses on my part. Certainly didn't mean to confuse the OP. He stated he was going to return it for a G.

One of the best know AF-S non "G" is the 300mm F4. It has best of both worlds - inbuilt motor and an aperture ring, great for DSLR and film cameras.

On the other hand there are non AF-S "G" - 70-300 I have is one such. It does not AF on 3xxx or 5xxx bodies.

I own a 300 AF-S and it is a awesome lens for the money.

I actually just got the 80-200af-d lens for my D300. It was a "bargain" lens from KEH....Wow!!! What a lens! Not only was this thing spotless, but it is sharp as a tack and focuses nice and quick on the D300. If I were the OP , I would keep the lens and upgrade the camera!!

There are a lot older "D" and the AIS lenses which are as good (and at times better optically and mechanically) than the newer "G" type AF-S lenses. There comes a point when the cost difference (between AF-S and non AF-S) of a few lenses is more than the cost of upgrading to a body with motor. So it makes a good case for upgrading the body, if you like the older non AF-S lenses.
