Zoom lens question?

There's an air show coming up here on the base on April 9th and I'm considering renting/borrowing a lens for the event. I only have my kit lens right now (18-55mm) and i'm pretty sure it's not going to cut it for taking photos of flying planes. So i'm wondering what lens would serve me well for the event?

I shot an air show last summer with a 55-200mm. Found myself looking for more reach on the long end. I would suggest if you're going to rent or borrow, go for a 300mm auto focus lens or higher. Check out Goz63 gallery, View Profile: goz63 - Nikonites. He shot an air show last year with a 55-300mm lens. Another lens everyone seems to like is the 70-300mm lens.

Keep checking back. I'm sure others will chime in with their input, too.

I have used my 55-300mm (D60) for basketball, volleyball, football, baseball, landscape shots you can't go wrong with this one. Just anticipate the shot.

I agree with the above posts. The 55-300 VR lens would be my first choice for what you want to do. The 70-300 VR would be my second choice. The 70-300 non VR lens would need a monopod to do what you want to achieve. Shoot at least at 1/500 to 1/1000 shutter speed and track the planes as they go by you, keeping them in focus in the viewfinder. Good luck on your shoot. Let's see some of what you shoot. :)

Thanks everyone, I'll definitely be back to post some photos. The last year they had the air show here, three years ago, I think, they had two days that we could go. The first day is a family day for military members and their families only, which means it's a lot less crowded and traffic isn't bad. I'm also hoping I don't get sunburned to a crisp again!!
