I have this lense. Came with the camera as a kit. It's a good versatile lense that covers a wide range. Allot of people use it as their walk around lense. Not really good for low light situations.

I shot with it for three years on a D7000. No one ever commented, "Yeah, nice image. But you obviously took it with that cheesy kit lens...."

I love my 18-105. It's sort of a Jack-of-all-Trades Master-at-None sort of proposition and as such, it was my go-to lens for walkabouts and day-to-day shooting for a looong time. Image quality on my '7100 is surprisingly good with the 18-105mm.

You might want to consider the newer Nikon 18-140mm, though, if you have some extra scratch in the budget.

The only reason the 18-105mm isn't on my camera right now is that it was supplanted by the Sigma 50-150mm. But that's a horse of a different color.

I used one with my D7000, never had any issues with it. Great all around lens, or as they call a walk around lens. Its not an FX lens so I sold it when I moved to my 600.

I am a "hobbyist" as well and I will vouch for this lens. Going from a P&S camera to a D7000 was a big step for me. I thought the 18-105 "kit" lens was something I would learn with and outgrow as I got better. Turns out, the better I got the more I liked the lens. From vacation pics at Disney to family pics at Bar-B-Que's I love the versatility and sometimes I got outstanding quality shots, which leads me to believe any issues are operator influenced. Due to budget issues, this was the only lens I had for 15 months. Now I have the 35mm 1.8 for inside/low light and the 70-300mm VR II for my kids sporting events. I take great shots and horrible shots with all lenses equally but the point is I sure do enjoy my equipment.

Its my walk about lens and I love it. I use it for almost everything.
Its not heavy so carrying it all day is not an issue.

I love my 18-105. True it may be an inexpensive kit lens, but it will hold its own in almost anything but low light. If you are on a budget this is a fantastic lens for the price!

I also had this as the kit lens on my D7000. I didn't baby the camera and lens, but I don't treat it badly either. I think my major mistake was picking up the camera and lens by the lens, which I do not do any more, but I would have never thought that it would cause a problem either. In any case, this lens has a plastic (instead of metal) mount and that plastic broke and the lens will not attach to the camera any more. I bought a 50mm f1.8 and sent the 18-105 back to Nikon for repair (warranty). They would not cover it and called it physical damage. They wanted over $100 to fix it with the same plastic part. I decided not to get it fixed and found the part online for 10-15 bucks. I haven't ordered it yet, but I plan to try to fix it myself (video online). It takes very good pictures, but the construction quality is not great to say the least. If you end up getting it, make sure you're taking great care to never bump it or pick up your camera by the lens.

Very good, versatile, affordable lens. The more I've used it, the more I've realized its qualities; even as the kit lens that come with my D7000. If I just had the camera body an was buying a lens separately, I'd probably consider the 16-85, 18-105, or the 18-140. Most likely I will keep the 18-105 and possibly add something like a 70-300 someday. As far as quality, I dropped my camera one time last year; about 3 feet onto our carpeted living room floor. It hit lens first and the lens cap was shoved in at an angle; however there was no damage and it's worked fine ever since.
