Sigma, Tamron and Nikon...Oh my!

Now,that I got the go ahead from the boss, aka,my wife.I was given a 250.00 allowance to get another lenses. I found three 300mm lenses at different price ranges. A Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX VR, which is a refurb.for 219.00
A Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 SLD DG Macro Lens with built in motor. For 144.00
And a Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro Zoom Lens with Built In Motor for 199.00

My gut tells me, besides that fact I ate way too much turkey, that the Nikon maybe the way to go. It's still early into black Friday so I'm still digging. Any advice, tips, experience with these picks?

The Nikkor 55-300mm came with my D5100 and it's on my D7100 95% of the time. Actually, before I got the D7100 it never came off the D5100 ever.

I have a couple of the sigma zooms you mention,my 55-300 is way better if for no other reason it has the VR, 300mm is a good grab that shot lens and VR helps make the most of that.

I have been looking at lenses and have heard that the (correct me if I'm wrong) 70 to 300 is not only cheaper, but has better quality and performance over the 55-300

The 70-300 that is better than the 55-300 is normally a lot more expensive, there are a few older versions of the 70-300 and i would say the 55-300 is better than those,as i said if only for the VR

I was seeing that as well. Which made that out of my price range.

I am glad to read this post as I was looking at those exact lenses except I was comparing them to the Nikkor 70-300mm VR.

I think I am also going to go Nikon again and get the 70-300mm VR lens. I just don't need 55mm coverage as I have two lenses in that range now.

Glad this helped. I did buy my son the
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 SLD DG Macro Lens with built in motor because it has the macro feature. He likes doing close ups on bugs, and other things.
