I have the NikonAF-S NIKKOR 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G ED with VR and the NikonAFNIKKOR 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 G and wanted to see how much of a difference there is between these lens and the cost difference. Obviously this is not for my help since I have both, but figured someone else might find this helpful and it was a slow evening.

Is it just me or does the 55 look better? I thought that the 70 was supposed to be better? Damn you Ken Rockwell you lied to me!! ;)

You have to look SPECIFICALLY at the lens I linked to. I didn't know at the time of purchase there are TWO lens that are 70-300mm. That is how I ended up with this one. It is a low end lens selling for about $125. At the time I was purchasing it I thought I was purchasing higher end 70-300mm but in my checking out I got this one.

Yes, the 70-300mm VR is significantly better than this version of the 70-300mm, but IMO the Tamron 70-300mm VC (also different from the previous and much worse non-VC model) is even better.

In you example it looks like the 55-300mm justified its much higher cost.
