Cant get P mode to work

Newbie with a D90. Bought a used zoom lens off Ebay - Nikkor 55-300 a year ago. Finally taken it out and played with, I just cant get the Aperture/shutter dials to operate in P mode. All other modes including manual adjust normally.
Tried with my standard lens and the P mode works fine.
Living way up in the Pacific northwest, 1000 miles to the nearest city.
Any help or suggestions sure would be appreciated.

Thanks

You really don't operate the shutter or aperture dials in the Program mode. You use the Main Command Dial (rear dial) to change the Aperture & Shutter. Just rotate it and see the shutter speed / aperture change. One goes up and the other goes down. Always giving you the correct exposure

I would give it the sack....Why not use the modes that do adjust normally then...Problem solved...

Read the manual could be a big help...

In P mode the camera sets shutter speed and aperture for optimal exposure(user can rotate command dial to choose from different combinations of shutter speed and aperture that will produce optimal exposure) recommended for snapshots and in other situations in which there is little time to adjust camera settings.

This was out of my d3100 user manual. But it seems that when using the P mode setting you must program it letting the camera handle it from there. I never used that mode so far so this is the best I can do.
I hope this info will help. But I'm still too much of a newbie to be able to trouble shoot. But there are other members here who are much more knowledgeable than I am. :)

oops it looks like they beat me to it. Lol :) I'm too slow at typing I guess. Lol :D

You cannot adjust the shutter and aperture in P mode. P mode controls the shutter and aperture for you. All you can adjust in P mode is exposure compensation.

Thanks guys, I played around with different lighting situations and indeed the P mode functioned, but very limited choices and both shutter/aperture are fused together. It will be a function I believe I would rarely use. Great to have that sorted out.
I had hoped that it was like a manual mode where the baseline exposure is set automatically and one could adjust shutter and aperture separately with full range of choices. Hence quicker speed to be ready to shoot in those moments, I guess its game of knowing what to do to bring the light meter into range quickly.
Practice makes perfect.
Too thick headed to read and digest all info in the manual.
Now to save up for a wide angle lens. Is there a good reference location that has detailed pics of actual photos from different sizes and options of nikkor lens?

Check out the wide angle section here in this site, many threads on the different options.

I want to take photos of beside a river or at a lake that kind of thing

Well everyone has their favorite but I'm very partial to my Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 personally.
There's a lot of love for the Tokina 12-24 f4 as well.
