Nikon 28-300 3.5-5.6 VRII on a D700

I am looking for an all purpose lens for my D700. I would like to use it mostly for travel (buildings inside+outside, people/street, landscape), to avoid lens changing and not to carry too much lenses around.
I was thinking about the Nikon 28-300 3.5-5.6 VRII. Is that a good idea on a D700 since I understood it is a consumer lens? Anyone already has experience with this combination?
For low light I would eventually carry my 50mm 1.8G.

I have the 28x300 on my D700 and seldom take it off. I tend to like the longer tele lenses, so for me this is tops.

Consumer does not necessarily equal poor quality. Had you searched the forum for this lens you would prevent me from once again recounting the Scott Kelby anecdote where he states that this is his family vacation lens - one body, one lens, no camera bag. You'll find sharper, you'll find faster, and you'll find yourself carrying more than one lens.
