Ive only had my Nikon 70-200 F2.8 for 2 weeks and ive already decided I also want the Nikon 24 - 70 F2.8.... I absolutely love my 70 - 200, and even though I found it hard to part with the 1500 Dollars it cost me, after using it I can really understand the importance of big aperture and pro glass, and also the difference in the quality of the photos... I spent the past few days thinking of the 24 - 70, reading reviews and watching videos about it... Is it that im just greedy and want want want? Or is this something normal that happens to everyone who gets their first piece of Pro glass?! Is there something wrong with me?

Ken Rockwell says its not worth buying this to use on a DX Camera, Is there anyone on here who has used it on a DX format camera?

Ken Rockwell is a dolt. The 24-70mm is an awesome lens and is the lens that will spend the most time on your camera. Before I picked up my D800 I used this lens on my D7000, works just wonderfully and if anything, is even better on a DX than an FX because it's catching only the sweet spot of the lens. So like I said, Ken Rockwell is a dolt....period.

Lol fare enough... I just saw his name mentioned several times on this forum and its one of the first pages which pops up on google.... Im astonished by prices, there are very few used ones on ebay (Literally a handful), and most of them sell about 200 Dollars less than brand new... for just 200 Dollars difference might aswell get it brand new with warranty...

Word of caution - DO NOT BUY A USED 24-70mm.

Don't get me wrong, I think used lenses are a great thing to buy but not a 24-70mm. This lens is such a work-horse of a lens and is used so much and so often that by the time a photographer is ready to sell it, it's been through the ringer several times over. Besides, if you even do find a used one (beat to a pulp even) it will only be a couple $100 less than a new one.

Issue 1 - there aren't many on Ebay and the price is not much less than brand new...what does that tell you about this lens? :)

Issue 2 - you don't need VR with those focal lengths and that speed.

Issue 3 - I am not even going to comment on that. lol

Those two lenses would be my dream zoom kit...

I agree with Dave. I have never been very impressed with Rockwell's reviews. Also, I do not see anything wrong with buying a lens like that to use on a DX camera. Who knows, you may get FX fever in the future and will be glad you already have FX lenses. Also, just because you have a DX camera does not mean you shouldn't get the best lens you can afford. I say, go for it.

Thanks for the helpful advice :)

What does issue 3 refer to?

Rather, why not just get a fast prime? I seldom use my 18-70 anymore since my 35 covers its sweet middle spot and then 50 covers the 70 end with MUCH better apertures. Now, 70+ is something I really want right now and maybe something like 10-18 for wider DX angles.

Oh ok... You guys were right, been having a look on ebay, there are some shocking second hand ones for sale, smashed and bashed! Chipped and scratched!
